Geologic Map of IcelandAt a glance it is easily seen that Iceland is formed from igneous rocks at the spreading point of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge which splits Iceland in two.
At the southern coast of Iceland, we can see Katla volcano nestled under Myrdalsjokull glacier. The majority of known outcrops of Katla at the caldera rim and immediately outside it, are silicic. though it is known to erupt a primarily bimodal in composition, comprising alkali basalt and mildly alkali rhyolites. This bimodal composition is ascribed to rabid segregation of material from a large mantle –source beneath a propagating rift. (11) Below: Map taken from the Icelandic Institute of Natural History.
